Identification Guide
A beginner-friendly framework for identifying the UK's birds. Start with the obvious features, then add the details.
Start with size and shape
Is it the size of a sparrow, a blackbird, or a pigeon? Note the bill shape, tail length, and overall posture before colour.
Look for colour and pattern
Focus on a single bold feature: a red breast, a yellow wing patch, a black cap, or a forked tail. These field marks beat trying to memorise every feather.
Watch behaviour
Does it hop or walk? Feed on the ground or hang upside down? Fly in a straight line or swoop and glide? Behaviour is a powerful ID clue.
Listen to the habitat
A bird in a reedbed is unlikely to be a woodpecker. Match where you are with the likely species and let the habitat narrow your choices.
